In 2006-07, a US-Antigua trade dispute arose over the sale of online games. Antigua ended up asking the WTO to order the US to pay $ 3.4 billion US $ in damages. According to Antigua, Washington's copyright claims had triggered a crisis in the country's software industry.

Prime Minister Spencer is known internationally as a capable diplomat and that was the reason why in 2008 he was elected President of the 77 countries group (G77).

Spencer's UPP won the March 2009 parliamentary elections with 51.1% of the vote. A year later, a judge overturned Spencer's election to 2 other UP MPs, throwing the country into a constitutional and political crisis until an October 2010 appeals court overturned the ruling.

In a speech to the UN General Assembly in October 2013, Spencer urged the colonial states to pay compensation for slavery. Now is the time for their words to be followed by compensation to the victims. " The Economist subsequently speculated on the amount of compensation that could be involved, and for natural reasons reached quite astronomical amounts. Slavery paid for the economic development of Western Europe in the 16-18. century, created the basis for the original accumulation and thus for the development of capitalism, so the debt is huge.
