Saint Lucia’s population in 1999 was estimated at 150,000 people, with a growth rate of 0.9%. The economy of Saint Lucia was largely dependent on its services sector, which accounted for around 60% of the country’s GDP. This was supplemented by the agricultural and manufacturing industries. Foreign relations in 1999 were largely positive with the country enjoying strong ties with many Caribbean nations and the wider international community. Politically, Saint Lucia had been a semi-presidential republic since 1979 when it formally adopted a democratic system. The post was temporarily taken over by Stephenson King. In August, King printed elections to find Compton’s replacement, and in December was himself elected to the post. Compton had died in September, and King had formally taken over the post from that point on.
